PayThyme is the first Open Source UK statutory payroll, and has been developed by Clockwork Software Systems, who also provide payroll support and other services, and develop other business applications. At the UK Linux & Open Source Awards 2005 PayThyme payroll took the Award for the Best Linux/Open Source Server Application.

[Python Powered] Clockwork is an original member of the Python Business Forum and our people are active in local LUGs and other organisations committed to Free Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS).

General information

  • PayThyme is specific to UK payroll. Each country has its own tax and payroll laws and those in the United Kingdom are particularly complex. Please do not waste your time or our bandwith if you do not wish to run a UK payroll.
  • The preview edition (PayThyme 3.2 beta) is available as a fully packaged download for Windows and Linux.  This is currently in testing and we do not recommend that you use it in a live commercial context.
  • The stable version is available as source only.  Any competent Linux professional will be able to download PayThyme and Thyme from this site, and then build PayThyme from the instructions provided.
  • Download editions of PayThyme are entirely unsupported. Versions built from source will not be Inland Revenue accredited as the build is outside our control.
  • If you want a supported payroll, please contact us by calling 0121 313 3855 or by visiting

Downloading PayThyme

  • Windows version (3.2 beta): use the download link at the bottom of this page.
  • Linux version (3.2 beta), for Ubuntu 6.06 (dapper) and Debian 3.2 (etch):
    • Add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list:
      deb ./
    • install the paythyme package.
  • Stable version (2.6.8 for linux): use the download link at the bottom of this page.

Before downloading the stable version of paythyme (2.6.8) you need to be aware of the following:

  • You need a Linux system with gcc, the X Window System, Qt, Python and PyQt installed. (Alternatively, you can try the preview edition of PayThyme 3.2 on Windows).  A monitor with resolution 1024x768 is really the minimum for some of the payroll screens.

  • We have built and tested PayThyme successfully on the following distributions:
Debian Sarge, Red Hat 9, SuSE 9.1, SuSE 9.3, SuSE 10.1, Fedora Core 1, Core 2, Core 3 and Core 4, and Ubuntu 5.10.

  • You need Python 2.2 or later. Try installing the Thyme CD, (whose image you can download) and do not proceed further until Thyme installs without errors. Then run 'makethyme'. If this comes up with a screen, just quit. If it doesn't, and comes up with an 'xpath' error, then you need to install an up to date PyXML module for your system.

  • Only when Thyme has installed correctly should you try to install PayThyme payroll.
  • Please remember that this download version of Thyme is unsupported (Thyme is available as supported software for an annual subscription).
